MSI-F Series Magnetostrictive Linear Position Sensor with Profibus Output

Flexible, high-accuracy absolute non-contact magnetostrictive position sensor for stroke lengths from 900 up to 20,000 mm.

Position measurement is performed using ring-type position magnets moving along the waveguide without mechanical contact, ensuring wear-free operation and long service life.

The sensor flange is made of high-grade stainless steel, providing excellent durability and suitability for harsh industrial environments.

The MSI-F supports sensor lengths of up to 20 meters. Thanks to the flexible waveguide design, the sensor can be supplied in compact packaging (900 × 900 × 100 mm), allowing safe transportation regardless of the measuring length.

Using BCD address switches S1 (101) and S2 (100), the node address of the PROFIBUS sensor can be set from 3 to 99.

If the PROFIBUS sensor is the last node on the PROFIBUS line, the DIP switches T1 and T2 for the integrated PROFIBUS terminator must be switched ON.

Installation Guidelines

Flexible Waveguide
Sensors with a flexible waveguide are used in vertically mounted hydraulic cylinders and in applications requiring non-standard measuring lengths and motion profiles. The PTFE coating of the waveguide enables operation in harsh environments with high contamination levels.

Position measurement is performed using ring-type magnets moving along the sensing rod without physical contact. Installation of the flexible waveguide sensor is possible both inside hydraulic cylinders and on external equipment using special mounting clamps.

INSTALLATION WITHOUT AUXILIARY TUBE

The minimum bend radius is 250 mm. Exceeding this limit may cause irreversible damage to the sensor waveguide due to stretching and deformation.

INSTALLATION WITH AUXILIARY TUBE

The sensor flange accommodates the installation of an auxiliary tube with the following dimensions:

- Outer Ø 10 mm, inner Ø 8 mm, maximum length 8 meters

- Outer Ø 12.7 mm, inner Ø 8.5 mm, maximum length 20 meters

The auxiliary tube must be made of non-magnetic material. For horizontal installation, clamping brackets must be installed every 500 mm.

For ordering the auxiliary tube:

Ø 10 mm: order code 100HFXXXXX, where XXXXX = stroke length in mm + 150 mm

Ø 12.7 mm: order code 127HFXXXXX, where XXXXX = stroke length in mm + 230 mm

Example:

For a sensor with a 900 mm stroke length, order code: 100HF01050

For a sensor with an 8500 mm stroke length, order code: 127HF08730

Interface

The sensor complies with all PROFIBUS-DP requirements (EN 50170).

All measurements performed by the sensor are absolute and transmitted via RS485 at a maximum speed of 12 Mbit/s.

The PROFIBUS-DP bus allows connection of up to 32 devices on a single segment. In addition to transmitting the main measured parameter (position), PROFIBUS-DP provides advanced functions for diagnostics and configuration. These parameters are loaded onto the bus via a GSD file (device-specific technical specifications).

Data Exchange

When measuring with multiple magnets, 1 byte of status data and 3 bytes of position data are transmitted per cycle.

The status data byte contains: an error bit and the number of positions in the current measurement.

P102 Measurements with one magnet (standard)

Simultaneous measurements with up to 3 magnets, minimum distance between magnets 76 mm.
